Rust en Vrede Named Among World's Best Winery Restaurants
Rust en Vrede Restaurant has landed on Wine Enthusiast's "57 Best Winery Restaurants in the World for 2026" - one of only three South African restaurants to make the global list. Set in the estate's historic 1780 Cape Dutch cellar, Chef Fabio Daniel's kitchen earned particular praise for its bespoke Experience Menu, paired with some of Rust en Vrede's rarest wines. A proud moment for one of our own.

Stellenbosch Lecturer Makes Global History
Delecia Davids, a lecturer in Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Education, has become the first South African academic ever awarded the Einstein Fellowship - a prestigious annual award that sends one researcher worldwide to Einstein's former summer house in Germany for six months. Davids, founder of SU's Digital Agency Studio, will use the fellowship to research coloured identity and memory in South Africa. A genuinely proud local moment.

Stellenbosch Ranked 3rd Nationally The FW de Klerk Foundation's 2026 Local Government Report Card gave Stellenbosch Municipality 86/100 - third among all local municipalities sampled. A genuine local win, with Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser noting there's "always room to improve."

Saturday and Tuesday are write-offs, weather-wise - so if you only get outside twice this week, make it Sunday and Monday. Our pick: Jonkershoek in the morning while it's still cool and quiet, or a lap of the Botanical Garden before the Saturday market crowds arrive. Skip the gym plan you'll talk yourself out of - a 30-minute walk on a dry day beats a training programme you never start. And if Saturday does wash out on you, Vector MMA's free self-defence seminar (see above) is indoors and free, which is about as good a Plan B as this week offers.

Our pick of the week

If you only book one thing off this whole list, make it the vint. hidden gems evening on 4 September. Not because it's the biggest event - it's the opposite. Three winemakers who've never needed a big name to make good wine, pouring for a room that's actually listening. In a week full of watch parties and market stalls, that's the one worth clearing a diary for.
