Good morning, Winelands ☕️
Heritage Month has been warming up for a fortnight, and next Thursday it truly arrives. Farms right across the four towns are lighting fires for Heritage Day - spit braais, boerewors bars, a silent disco under the oaks - and the forecast has decided to cooperate: after one wet Tuesday, the skies clear into what AccuWeather is calling "scintillating sunshine" for the day itself. Scroll to our dedicated Heritage Day guide below before the good tables book out.
Before then, it's a genuinely rich week for a dinner table. We're sending you to Klein Drakenstein to meet a winemaker who used to build satellites and once spent eleven days orbiting Earth - his Paarl farm sits on land where Italian POWs were housed in 1945, which is the kind of layered history you don't get told twice. And on Friday 25th, Jordan Wine Estate sits Carmen Stevens - South Africa's first Black woman to qualify as a winemaker - at the head of the table for a dinner that feels like the right way to close out Heritage Month.

Community Highlights
Geyser switch-off times have changed in Paarl, Wellington and Simondium
If your hot water's been running out at odd hours, this is why - Drakenstein's Demand Side Management Programme now switches household geysers off from 07:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00, a change driven by Eskom's updated peak hours. Your tank should stay hot through the gap, but if you're used to a 7pm bath, plan around it - this one's not temporary.
A dry winter, and a summer worth watching
Stellenbosch Municipality is asking residents to start saving water - voluntary for now, no restrictions in force. Paarl's had roughly 330mm of rain this year once the May flood days are stripped out, against a usual 1,000mm, and forecasters are tracking a strong El Niño for the 2026/27 summer. Shorter showers, fixed leaks, water-wise gardens - easier now than in February.
Save the date: Garden Town Stellenbosch returns
📅 Fri 23 Oct - Sun 1 Nov 📍 Across Stellenbosch
Ten days of private home gardens opened to the public, plus the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden, a free market and Town Hall garden show - one of the few festivals that reaches Pniel, Kayamandi and Idas Valley properly. 🎟 Details here
Call for local talent: Stellenbosch Festival of Lights
Stellenbosch Municipality is building a Local Talent Database ahead of this year's Liggiesfees and Festive Market - singers, dancers, musicians, artists and facilitators wanted. Registration's open now. 👉 Register here

Weather This Week: 17 - 23 Sept
Good news before the bad: the run from Friday through Monday is glorious - mostly sunny, warming steadily from 22° to 24°, next to no rain. Then Tuesday brings the week's one washout, 65% rain with morning showers rolling into the afternoon, so keep that day loose. It clears fast - Wednesday's back to sunshine, and Heritage Day itself is shaping up beautifully.
Best days: Fri 18 - Mon 21, and Heritage Day, Thu 24. Friday suits Leopard's Leap's lunch table in Franschhoek or the Roodekrantz dinner in Raithby; the weekend's built for the poetry workshop or the Women's Run Collective at Webersburg. Skip planning anything outdoors for Tuesday - and breathe easy booking your Heritage Day braai, the forecast's on your side.

Property Of The Week
22 Straightway Close, Spanish Farm, Somerset West

Some houses are built for a view; this one's built around it. Set within the gated Spanish Farm Estate with the Helderberg filling every north-facing window, the double-storey home pairs sharp architectural lines with a genuinely imported Italian kitchen - dual Siemens smart ovens, premium Lalegno flooring underfoot throughout. Four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms across 414m² under roof, including a ground-floor guest suite and a dedicated study for whoever's working from home this year.
The practical side is just as considered: solar panels with battery backup, automated blinds, fibre-ready smart home tech, and pet-friendly grounds for whichever four-legged resident comes with you. Two garages plus four more parking bays, all behind 24-hour estate security.
Our take: Silver Forest Spa, Parel Vallei High and Erinvale Golf Course are all a short drive away - this is a house for people who've already decided Somerset West is home, and just needed the right street.

A Little Extra Inspo
Heritage Month has a way of turning into a checklist - the right flag, the right song, the right plate of food. This week, try the quieter version of it: ask someone at your Heritage Day table where their family's braai traditions actually come from, and really listen to the answer. The Winelands is about to spend a public holiday doing the loud, joyful version of belonging brilliantly - fires lit from Paarl to Franschhoek, whole towns turning out. The small, unhurried version, the one conversation at a time, is just as much the point.
"Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu" - a person is a person through other people. It's an old isiZulu and Nguni saying, and it's not a bad way to walk into Heritage Day: whatever's on your plate on Thursday, you probably didn't get the recipe alone. 🫶🏽
That’s it, you’re brilliantly up to date with everything that’s worth knowing about in our beautiful Winelands.
