Good morning, Winelands

Tuiskoms brings the Maties home this week, two poets swap translated verses over coffee on Saturday morning, and Luna Paige launches her Camino album at the Drostdy on Friday night. It's also a perfect week to have a table booked - a blindfolded dinner at Nederburg, a slow storytelling lunch at Muratie, and a whole weekend of live-fire cooking out at FYRE.

Add a new street art trail opening in town, Tourism Month kicking off in Paarl, and one very stubborn rain system booked in for Tuesday, and there's a lot to get through before the kettle's even cold. We've also found the quiet fix for a problem half our readers have been living with, and a Somerset West listing worth the long scroll. Coffee in hand? Let's go.

What we’ve got for you this week:

  • Things To Do & Events

  • Community Highlights: the Maties come home, Tourism Month kicks off, and a new street art trail launches

  • Little Insiders: a free CapeNature week and a morning built for new moms

  • Eye Catching Deals: half-price deals from Spek & Bone to a full day's wine safari

  • Weather

  • Property Of The Week: a mountain-and-fynbos estate in Somerset West

  • Mind, Health & Fitness: Spring in the Winelands…sneeze!

  • A Little Extra Inspo: Satay chicken + coconut rice

Together with Lifta

The Staircase Problem Nobody Talks About

For many homeowners, the decision to move begins not with the home, but with the staircase. Reduced mobility or concern for an ageing relative can make upper floors difficult to access.

A Lifta Home Lift offers a practical alternative. Since 2007, Lifta SA has helped South Africans remain independent in the homes they love. Designed for existing homes and new builds, Lifta Home Lifts require no conventional shaft, pit or machine room and cause minimal disruption during installation.

The compact Duo carries two people, while the spacious Trio is wheelchair friendly. Both operate from a standard 220 volt household supply and include essential safety features.

A Lifta Home Lift is more than an accessibility solution. It supports comfort and independence.

Tourism Month opens at Boland Park - The Cape Winelands District Municipality kicked things off with district officials and local tourism operators in Paarl, under this year's national theme, "Growing South Africa's Tourism Sector in the Digital Era." Drakenstein's Cllr Laurichia van Niekerk called it an invitation on two fronts: government and industry working together, and visitors abroad coming to see the Winelands for themselves. Tourism Month runs through September, closing on World Tourism Day, 27 September.

Weather This Week: 10 - 16 Sept

The week opens mild and mostly cloudy rather than wet - low rain risk through the weekend, with Sunday the warmest day at a pleasant 24°. Then it turns: Monday and Tuesday bring the week's real weather, with rain chances climbing to 55-60% and a few rumbles of thunder likely Tuesday.

☀️ Best days: Sat 12 - Sun 13

Property Of The Week

Boskloof Eco Estate, Somerset West

This is mountain-and-fynbos living at it’s best. Six bedrooms and 680m² of living space on a private, landscaped erf, with a pool and entertainment area built for exactly this kind of spring evening, a flatlet for guests or family, and enough parking for the whole crew. Solar, battery backup and a borehole-fed water tank mean the lights (and the pool pump) stay on no matter what the grid does. Set within Boskloof's 51 hectares of walking trails and private dam - just 72 homes on the whole estate, 24-hour security, and a shopping centre you can stroll to. Somerset West living, elevated.

Mind, Health + Fitness

Spring in the Winelands means glorious light and pollen season doing its worst work right alongside it. A little care now means you're out enjoying it, not on the couch with the antihistamines:

  • Reset your body clock while you can. Longer days are the best free tool you've got - ten minutes of morning light does more for your sleep and mood than anything in a bottle.

  • Know your pollen days. Flowering vines and Stellenbosch's oak avenues mean the count spikes hard through September and October - worth a check before you commit to that outdoor lunch.

  • Back your gut, not just your immune system. Local honey, fermented foods and an actual night's sleep still outperform any single supplement for allergy season.

  • Eat what's actually in season. Asparagus, spring greens and the first stone fruit are hitting the farm stalls now - better value and better nutrition than anything flown in.

  • Ease into the sun, don't ambush it. Cape UV climbs fast this time of year - a hat and SPF on that long walk will save you later.
